On the trail from the viewpoint of Eira do Serrado down to Curral das Freiras in Madeira.

The village of Curral das Freiras ('Nuns' Corral') that can be seen below was founded in the 16th century by the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara who fled Funchal seeking refuge from French pirates looting the island. Actually this trail had been the only way to reach the valley until 1959 when a precipitous road was built across the vertical rock face above. Only in 2004 a new tunnel, over 2 kilometres long, was opened, making the road much safer.
