Interior of St. Leonard's church in the village of Lipnica Murowana.

This 14th century church is one of the oldest and most precious wooden churches in this region. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2003, it hasn't changed much through the ages, though it barely survived the great flood of 1997.

Inside you can see some original colourful polychromies from 16-18th century; ones on the presbitery walls depict (from the left) the Last Judgment, the Crucifixion (behind the altar) and the Last Supper. In the main altar there is a copy of a precious Gothic triptych from cca 1500, showing St. Leonard with St. Laurent and St. Florian.

According to some folk legends, the original church was built here in 1203 on the site of a pagan temple; a mysterious old oak pole behind the altar is said to be a last remnant of this temple. Worth a look is the painting on the wall, dated 1689 and showing the scene of Crucifixion.
